If you don't want it to download a file, and didn't tell it in time to not download that file, you will have to go back and delete that incomplete file after setting it to do not download that file.. The priority sets the order of which pieces that contain the data for that file will be requested. A 'seed' is a peer that has ALL the blocks of data so a request to a seed WILL return something, unless your client is "choked" or banned by a peer client.
The only time a request will be "wasted" is when the peer has no available slots for your request and at that point your client will be 'choked'. In other words, some but not a lot of overhead. Whereas for a "Priority" setting, there appears to be little if any "wasted" bandwidth as [guessing here] the client on my end is able to request the pieces in "priority order" from the seeders or other peers, to the extent another peer might have the requested piece???? In other words, not very much overhead at all.
The protocol is very efficient and yes, very little is wasted in overhead, some is unavoidable especially when there are HTTP trackers for a torrent, as HTTP is a higher 'cost' protocol than UDP is, and "cost" in networking refers to time rather than monetary concerns.
OK ciaobaby, you've got my curiosity up a bit! If i can impose a bit more on your knowledge base, maybe you can confirm or correct my speculation about "how it works".
I fully get the whole p2p thing and the concepts behind it For example, it would presumably be a big waste for the client to "broadcast" that it wants"any piece" because of the potential for both duplicates and also "nobody sending piece xxx" - so You can determine the order in which each part will be downloaded by choosing which part has the highest priority.
At the bottom of the uTorrent main download screen, go to the "Files" tab. Among the options that appear, select "High". This fraction of the file now has more priority than the others and will be finished before the others.
You can repeat the same process for any other item on the download list as many times as you want. There is no limit to how many fractions of the file have the highest priority. If you are downloading more than one item at the same time, you can also define which one will consume the most from your internet. In the list of torrents being downloaded from uTorrent, right-click the one that deserves the most haste and position the mouse over the option "Bandwidth Allocation".
Note that you have three options on this tab: High, Low or Normal. By default, every torrent starts to be downloaded in normal width, making all items in your queue consume the same amount of data from your internet, none more than the other.
If you want one of them to spend more data than the other, thus speeding up the download, select the option "High". Likewise, decrease the bandwidth for other items. This will unbalance data consumption and cause one of the files to be downloaded more quickly than the others. In the same tab "Bandwidth allocation", it is possible to find a pair of submenus identified as "Set download limit" and "Set upload limit". These are the options that determine how many bytes you will get from other users who share the torrent and how many bytes you will offer them.
That is to say, a user downloads a file on his computer via torrent and he allows others to access the file on the machine. Then, the file he downloaded becomes another seeder available online. More people do like that, more seeders of the file available. Since there are many seeders on the Internet, when a further user tries to download this file, it will match the nearest and fastest one for him.
So, he can quickly get what he wants with torrent. Therefore, to choose the source with more seeders will improve the download speed of the target files.
Yet, more seeders mean higher risks, you should make your own judgment and choose a reliable source with comparatively more seeders. Is uTorrent safe to use? How to use uTorrent safely from viruses? Are there alternatives for uTorrent if I give it up? Find everything in this article! Each download task in uTorrent will occupy a portion of the bandwidth. When more than one task is downloading at the maximum speed, all tasks will take a longer time to complete than only download each of them.
So, it is recommended to download those files one by one. You can, first of all, download the file you need most and then the others. Therefore, you can make use of the most urgent file and download the other ones at the same time.
If you agree, you should make a change in your uTorrent settings. The fewer things you do, the faster your torrent speed is going to be. Use a Task Manager to identify the processes that are taking up your valuable bandwidth. There are so many methods you can try to improve your speed, and that could write a novel about it.
